Learn the steps to install Microsoft Edge browser in Almalinux 8 or Rocky Linux 8 using command terminal for having Chrome and Firefox alternative.
In the web browser race, Microsoft was technically behind with Internet Explorer for a long time. However, to keep up with Chrome and Firefox, it introduced the Edge browser with Windows 10. Since Microsoft’s Internet Explorer doesn’t work that way anymore, a new browser should be found.
Well, the best thing is unlike IE, the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser is not just limited to Windows 10 only. It is available as a setup to install just like Google Chrome and Mozilla for all the popular operating systems including mobile devices.
As the Edge is based on Chromium (open source project) just like Chrome, we can also use the extensions available on the Chrome store on Edge. Moreover, Edge also offers some advanced features that are not available on Chrome such as taking screenshots directly from the browser.

There are two easy ways to install Microsoft Edge web browser either on Rocky or Almalinux 8. One is by directly installing the RPM binary package and the other using its Repository. We will show them both here.
Also, the given steps and command will work for other RPM-based Linux distros such as RHEL- RedHat, Fedora, CentOS 7/8.
#1st method using RPM binary:
Open system browser
Go to your system browser such as Firefox, available out of the box. However, if you are using a minimal server and don’t have any browser application then go for the second method given in this article.
In the browser, open the Mircosoft Edge official website. For ease, here is the link to visit the website.
Download Microsoft Edge RPM binary
Now, click on the Download button and select Linux (.rpm) binary to download. A pop-up will appear to save the RPM binary. Do that.
Open command terminal
Next, go to the Application launcher and select a terminal app to open. In short, open your Almalinux or Rocky Linux command terminal app.

As whatever we download from the browser by default goes into the Linux Downloads folder. hence, switch to it first.
Check whether the downloaded file is there or not:
Now, use the DNF to install the Microsoft Edge.
sudo dnf install ./microsoft-edge-stable-*x86_64.rpm
sudo yum install ./microsoft-edge-stable-*x86_64.rpm
Run the Edge Browser
Go to All Applications and search for it. Once you have its icon, click to run the same.
#2nd method: Using a repository
Import Microsoft GPG key
First, we need to add the GPG key used to sign the packages available to install the Edge browser on Linux systems.
sudo rpm --import https://packages.microsoft.com/keys/microsoft.asc
Add Microsoft Edge repository in Almalinux 8 | Rocky
Next, as we know the Edge browser is not available via the default base repository of AlmaLinux 8 or Rocky Linux 8, hence we add its officially provided repo, manually.
sudo dnf config-manager --add-repo https://packages.microsoft.com/yumrepos/edge
This command is just to rename the added repo, to identify easily.
sudo mv /etc/yum.repos.d/packages.microsoft.com_yumrepos_edge.repo /etc/yum.repos.d/microsoft-edge.repo
Run system update
Now, run the system update command once, so that our system can recognize the newly added repository on our Rocky or AlmaLinux systems.
sudo dnf udpate
