3 Ways to Install VLC Media Player on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

VLC Media Player is a very popular open-source media player for Desktop and smartphones. Here in this tutorial, we learn the various ways to install VLC Player on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy JellyFish.  

What is VLC, and its full form?

One of the most popular media players is the VLC ( VideoLAN Client) which always finds its way to be on the editorial list of best Open-source players. The key reason behind its wide acceptance is – the VLC media player plays files of all important audio and video formats. A double click is enough, alternatively, you can load files into the VLC interface using drag & drop or tap a video DVD using the menu bar command.

The player supports MPEG and DivX streaming and can therefore also play videos during the download. You can also play files packed by ZIP without having to unpack them beforehand. Users can artificially increase the volume of the film up to 200 percent if the video is too quiet.

Steps to install VLC on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Linux

The steps given here can be used for other Ubuntu versions such as 20.04 or 18.04 including Linux based on it, for example – Linux Mint, MX Linux including the parent OS – Debian.

#1st Method using GUI 

1. Open Ubuntu Software

The best way to install VLC on Ubuntu Linux, especially for beginners is to use the GUI interface of the OS. For that simply click on the Ubuntu Software and then on the Search icon. After that type- VLC, soon in the search results you will have the software.

As you click on the software to get further information, an Install button will be there on the right side. Click that, and the system will ask for your user password, provide it and complete the installation.

#2nd method- Using APT Repository

2. Run System update

Open the command terminal on your Ubuntu 22.04 Linux, and after that run the system update command using the APT package manager. This will update the package index cache and also install the available updates on your system.

sudo apt update

 

3. Install VLC on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

We don’t need to add anything such as a third-party repository on our Linux. It is because the stable package to install VLC is already present in the official base repository of Ubuntu 22.04. Hence, simply use the APT command given below:

sudo apt install vlc -y

 

#3rd method – Using SNAP

4. Install VLC using Snap

Snap is enabled by default on all modern Ubuntu Linux including Jammy. We can use its package repository to install various software, as VLC is also there, hence simply run the given command on your terminal.

sudo snap install vlc

5. Add Flatpak on Ubuntu 22.04

Just like the Snap package manager, Flatpak is not present in Ubuntu systems by default. Hence we have to install it first on our system manually.

sudo apt install flatpak
sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
sudo reboot

 

6. Use Flatpak to get VideoLan

Once we have the Flatpak installed on our system, we can use it to get the VLC media player using a single command in the terminal.

flatpak install flathub org.videolan.VLC

 

7. Run the VideoLan Client Media player

Once the installation is completed, go to the Application launcher and search for the VLC media player. As its icon appears, click to run the same.

8. How to update

According to the method you have used for the installation, go for the updating one as well.

For GUI users:

Those who have used the Ubuntu GUI Software app to install VLC, need to open it again and search for this media player. As you have VLC in the search result, click to open it and if any update is available, you will have a button for the same.

For APT users:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

For Snap

sudo snap refresh vlc

For Flatpak:

sudo flatpak update

 

8. Uninstall or Remove VLC from Ubuntu 22.04

Well, we have used multiple ways to install the VLC on Ubuntu 22.04, hence the methods to remove it will also depend on the one you have chosen to set it up on your system. Go for the one accordingly.

For GUI users:

Those who have used the Ubuntu GUI Software app to install VLC, need to open it again and search for this media player. As you have VLC in the search result, click to open it and click on the “BIN” icon to delete the software from your system.

For APT Users:

Users who have used the APT package manager to install VLC can run the given command to completely remove the media player.

sudo apt autoremove --purge vlc

For Snap users:

Well, snap users can go for this command syntax:

sudo snap remove vlc

For Flatpak users:

At last, here is the uninstall command for Flatpak users:

flatpak uninstall --delete-data org.videolan.VLC
