How to install Gnome Tweaks tool on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Linux operating system is popular because of the endless possibility it comes with. Being open-source, the users can customize its themes, icons with millions of available theme & icons packages online, especially if we talk about Ubuntu or Linux Distros running on GNOME. We can give Windows 10, macOS, or any other Dark & light look to our Linux PCs with the help of a tool called Gnome Tweak. As we all know installing themes or icons for beginners manually, purely using the command line, will be a cumbersome job. Therefore, to make that easy and very straight forward, the developers have developed this tool.


Here we are just going to show the process to install the Gnome Tweak tool on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, to easily apply custom themes and icon packages.

The given steps are not only applicable to 20.04 LTS but also for earlier Ubuntu versions such as 19.04/19.10;18.04/18.10… including Linux Mint.

Step 1: Open Command terminal of Ubuntu

You would already know how to do this, just go to Applications and run it or access it using a shortcut method that is CTRL+ALT+T.

Step 2: Run Update command with sudo rights

If you haven’t run package update command in a very long time then run it. However, for that and to perform the installation step you should have sudo access via your current user.

sudo apt update

Step 3: Command to install Gnome Tweaks

There is no need to add any third party repository because this tool is available on the official Ubuntu repo by default. Thus, simply running an ATP package manager command will allow us to install this theme and icon customizer tool.

sudo apt install gnome-tweaks

Step 4: Run the Tweaks tool

Click on the “Show Application” dots to access all the installed Applications and there search for “tweaks“. You will see its icon, click on it. This will open the Gnome Tweak tool,

Step 5:  Gnome Tweaks Appearance

Select the Appearance menu, and start changing the themes and icons including cursor, shell, and background & lock screen wallpapers.
