How to install LibreOffice on AlmaLinux or Rocky 8

LibreOffice is a free and open-source office suite and often considered a good alternative to the Microsoft Office suite. It offers impressive features, a user-friendly interface, comprehensive, and compatible with MS Office files. Here we let you know how to install LibreOffice on RHEL based AlmaLinux 8.x or Rocky Linux 8.

Being a fork of Apache OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice also contains all the essential components need to deal with daily document and calculation needs. It comes with a Word file created called Writer, the spreadsheet program is known as Calc, which competes with Excel; for MS PowerPoint alternative it has Impress; the Base, a database administrator software tool and Draw program for drawing and diagram. Although both OpenOffice and LibreOffice are the same, LibreOffice is much popular because it receives frequent updates, which means new features and early bug fixing.

LibreOffice is available for all major 32 bit & 64-bit operating systems such as Windows 10/8/7/xp; macOS 10.4 and newer, as well as for Debian and RPM-based. The source code is available as well to compile for the Linux platforms, for which the binary is not available.

 

Steps to install LibreOffice on AlmaLinux & Rocky 8

The steps given below are applicable for other RPM-based Linux distros such as RedHat, Fedora, and CentOS 8/7.

1. Download Latest LibreOffice for Linux

There is no single package to install all the component available in the official repository of AlmaLinux, thus what we have to download its RPM binary from the official website. Visit it, select Linux 64-bit, and hit the Download button. The latest version while performing this tutorial was LibreOffice 7.1.3.

2. Switch to Downloads Directory

Open your Alma or Rocky Linux command terminal. As whatever we download using the browser, goes into the Downloads directory by default, thus first we switch to that.

cd Downloads

Now, check whether the LibreOffice RPM setup file is available there or not.

ls

 

3. Extract Tar Archive File

The downloaded file will be in Tar.tgz format, thus first extract it to get the RPM packages.

tar -xvf LibreOffice_*_rpm.tar.gz

 

4. Install LibreOffice on AlmaLinux or Rocky 8

To install RPM packages on AlmaLinux or any other RedHat-based Linux, we can use DNF or YUM package manager. And here we will use the same. Also to install any application you need to have sudo rights.

Switch to extracted directory:

cd LibreOffice_*_rpm
cd RPMS
ls

COmmand to install LibreOffice on Linux

You will see all RPMS packages inside the folder, install all of them to set up LibreOffice on your system.

sudo dnf localinstall *.rpm

Install RPMS packages of LibreOfffice on AlmaLinux or Rocky

Type Y hit the Enter Key and wait until it not get installed.

 

Run LibreOffice

Finally, go to your system’s Application launcher and search for Libre Office, you will see all the apps to run. Click any other them.
