How to install Vivaldi browser on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy

Learn the commands to install the Vivaldi browser in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy JellyFish Linux using the command terminal by adding its repository.

Vivaldi is a feature-rich browser and one of the best alternatives to replace the popular Google Chrome. It is not only easy to handle but also offers an integrated email client option that allows the integration of various email services using IMAP or Pop3 protocols including Gmail. It can call up and manage your e-mails directly in the browser. Extensions and addons should also follow and expand the range of functions.

Apart from that multiple layout choice; an extremely tidy and usual tab view, and the most important functions in the menu bar on the left. Steps to install Vivaldi browser on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Linux

The steps, given here can be used for other Ubuntu versions such as 20.04 or 18.04 including Debian or its based Linux systems such as Linux Mint, POP OS, Elementary OS, MX Linux, and more…

1. Add the GPG Key

Our system needs to confirm that the packages we receive to install the Vivaldi browser online must be from its original source. Therefore, for that, it needs a GPG key used to sign the packages of Vivaldi by its developers. That’s why before going further add it to your system using the given commands.

sudo apt install wget gnupg2 ubuntu-keyring

Integrate the GPG key:

wget -O- https://repo.vivaldi.com/archive/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo gpg --dearmor | sudo tee /usr/share/keyrings/vivaldi.gpg

2. Add Vivaldi repository on Ubuntu 22.04

Well, unlike the popular FireFox browser, we cannot install Vivaldi using the system repository of Ubuntu 22.04. Hence, we are left with two options, one is either download the Debian binary of the browser and install it or add the repository for the same, manually. 3. Perform a system update

To integrate the added repository properly into your system run the system update command using the APT package manager. This will rebuild the repository cache so that our package manager can recognize the newly added repo.

sudo apt update

 

4.  Install Vivaldi on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Finally, we have configured the things we required to get the latest stable version of the Vivaldi browser on our Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Linux system. Now, we just need to use the APT to install it. Follow the given command:

sudo apt install vivaldi-stable

Those who are looking for a developer version to test the latest features before their release to the public can go for the Snapshot version of the browser using the given command:

sudo apt install vivaldi-snapshot

 

5. Launch the browser

Once the installation is completed, running the browse is pretty simple. We can either use the command terminal or the GUI interface of our Ubuntu 22.04 to run it.

For Terminal:

vivaldi &

Using GUI Application launcher

You will also have the Application launcher shortcut for the browser. To use that, click on the “Show Applications” button given on the left side Dock on your Desktop and then search for the Vivaldi. As its icon appears, click to run the same.

6. How to update the browser

As we have used the official Vivaldi repository to install it on our Ubuntu 22.04 LTS system, therefore, updating the browser is not an issue. Just run the system update command:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

 

7. Uninstall or Remove Vivaldi Linux

Well, if you still want to resort to Google Chrome or Firefox and don’t want Vivaldi anymore on your Ubuntu Linux, then here are the commands to completely remove it.

sudo apt remove vivaldi-stable

Those who have installed the developer version need to run:

sudo apt remove vivaldi-snapshot

If you also want to delete the GPG key and Repository added for this browser then use:

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/vivaldi.list
sudo rm /usr/share/keyrings/vivaldi.gpg
