Why Sony PS5 is So Big in Size, what’s Good in it

As time goes, all consumer electronics devices are becoming smaller, thinner, and lighter. Whereas the new upcoming Sony PS5 design is differing from the tradition, as Play station 5 is bigger in size, bulkier in shape, and heavier in weight than its predecessors. There are a couple of images available of the PS5 design over the net and this time those are official images, so the design is confirmed.

You can see comparison images of PS5 with all other consoles in existence and can easily notice that both in height and width is bigger. Moreover, PlayStation 5 is even heavier and bulkier than any other console we know till date. However, Sony is the best at what they do, so they may not have designed the PS5 with such design for no reason at all.

Now the question arises whether it was the demand for design aesthetics or the inside hardware needed such heavy and bulkier frames. Though I personally liked the model and its design, we still do not know enough about the hardware inside the PlayStation 5.

According to top official sources, there has no date been confirmed about the PS5 release, but the release would take place during Holiday, 2020 for sure. Also, people are already very excited about the ultra-smooth 4K graphics and crisp performance which PS5 would cater to, so an unorthodox aesthetics of design won’t be going to stop any potential buyer.

Why the PS5 Design is bulkier this time?

The VP of UX design of PlayStation 5 Matt MacLaurin was asked about this matter and he replied “Thermals. This gen is a little supercomputer. While the 7nm process delivers amazing heat performance for power, the power is very extreme. This tech is still so fresh it throws a lot of heat, so we need room to dissipate.” So, we can expect some pretty serious performance from the PS5 at the end of the day.

According to sources such as Techradar, the PS5 is going to have some serious hardware such as;

  • CPU: AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz (variable frequency)
  • GPU: 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz (variable frequency)
  • GPU architecture: Custom RDNA 2.
  • Memory interface: 16GB GDDR6 / 256-bit.
  • Memory bandwidth: 448GB/s.
  • Internal storage: Custom 825GB SSD

PlayStation 5 would be running 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.5GHz (at variable frequencies) over the PS4’s 8x Jaguar Cores at 1.6GHz. Naturally, a huge jump in performance can be expected. While talking about GPU it is going to be AMD RDNA 2 with 36 compute units capped at 2.23GHz. A computation performance of a peak of 10.28TF was stated by the GPU manufacturers.

Also, the Console itself is not the only one that is getting a bigger design, but the Controllers are following such pattern too. As PS5 DualSense controller is becoming much heavier and larger than the former DualShock Controller of PS4.

So a nice and comfortable grip can be experienced with the new controllers, while the console itself ensures long term gaming sessions without being overheated. Also, PS5 is keeping room for the fans and the third party designers so that they can customize looks, even more, to make the console look cool.

You can have a look at the image below about which Matt MacLaurin conveys “Customization with special editions will be beyond anything is seen before, someone mocked up a wooden design on Reddit and it looks crazy good.

Conclusion

The PlayStation 5 design won’t be a reason for nagging for any of the fans out there, especially when it is ensuring better and stable performance according to the official sources. Also, the controller size itself would be complementing the console design itself. Only those players with a table with tight racks within it may face problem to set the console within their setup, but it is nothing which can not be dealt with.
