Rhythmbox music player is one of the most popular music players and also comes as default in the Ubuntu operating system, however, in case you don’t have it pre-installed then you can use the command given in this article to install the Rhythmbox. While writing this tutorial the latest version of the Rhythmbox was Rhythmbox 3.4.2. The Rhythmbox is GTK based and uses the Gstreamer as media framework. It also has a plugin system to enhance and extend the capability of the music payer.
Steps to install the Rhythmbox Music player in Ubuntu or Linux Mint via command terminal.
- Open the Command terminal on your Ubuntu or Linux Mint. You can use the shortcut CTRL+ALT+T
- Note: Here we are using Ubuntu 18.04 but the steps would be the same for other Ubuntu versions 17.04, 16.04, 15.04, 14.04…
- Once terminal opened, first use the OS update command.
- sudo apt-get install update
- After updating the system, here the command to run to download and install the Rhythmbox on Ubuntu/Linux Mint.
- sudo apt-get install rhythmbox
- Now go to the Applications and you will see the icon of the Rhythmbox, click on that.
- Another way to install the Rhythmbox which is not a command line instead of that simply go to the Ubuntu software center and search for the Rhythmbox.
- When it appears, click on the Install button.
How to install the plugins in Rhythmbox. After downloading the plugin, extract it and copy the plugin folder to one of the following locations, based on your needs:
User-specific
${HOME}/.local/share/rhythmbox/plugins/
Systemwide ( needs root access )
/usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/
Now restart Rhythmbox. Goto Menu -> Plugins. Your new plugin should be listed there.
There are few default locations for the Rhythmbox music player to fetch the audio files, here are those, however, you can customize them too.
Music
${HOME}/Music is the default location. It can be changed in preferences.
Podcasts
${HOME}/Music is the default location. It can be changed in preferences.
Configuration
${HOME}/.local/share/rhythmbox/
Lyrics
${HOME}/.cache/rhythmbox/lyrics/
Artwork
${HOME}/.cache/rhythmbox/covers/
