Install Avidemux on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Linux

Learn the steps to install the Avidemux video editing program on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy JellyFish using the command terminal.

Avidemux is open-source software that can be installed not only on Linux but also on Windows, OS X, and BSD. We can use this program for editing video files. Mainly the program is intended for cutting, cropping videos, and extracting audio tracks from video files hence it is not for professional video editors but instead for those who are looking for an easy-to-use and handy tool for quick video editing. It can also be used for converting videos from one to other formats. Thus, Avidemux understands numerous formats. Edits that you make to a file can be saved as a script and thus conveniently applied to a large number of other videos.

The freeware allows the import of AVI, DivX, XviD, MPEG 1/2, MPEG 4, H263(+), MOV/3GP, OGM, as well as MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV. Many other popular formats and codecs are also supported. Extensive manipulations can be carried out via numerous filters. It is included in the libavcodec collection of FFmpeg. The format is suitable as a permanent archive format for video data.

Steps to Install Avidemux on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Linux

The steps are given here can be used for other versions of Ubuntu Linux such as 20.04 or 18.04 including Linux Mint, Elementary OS,  POP_OS, and more…

1. Run Apt Update

Before moving further to follow this guide, first run the system update command on your Linux along with the installation of a few additional packages.

sudo apt update

We will use the PPA repository, here in this tutorial, hence make sure the following packages are on your system.

sudo apt install software-properties-common apt-transport-https

 

2. Add Avidemux PPA repository

The packages of Avidemux are not available to install using the Ubuntu 22.04 default system repository because it is not available in it. Hence, we are left with two options one is by adding the PPA repository of it maintained by the XtraDEB team or using APPImage. Well, the PPA is a better option because we can easily get future updates for the application by just running the system update & upgrade command. Therefore, use the given command and add the repo for Avidemux.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xtradeb/apps

Press the Enter key and then run the update command:

sudo apt update

 

3. Install Avidemux editor on Ubuntu 22.04

Finally, we have the source to receive the packages of Avidemux video editor on Ubuntu 22.04 using our APT package manager for installing this open-source software. Hence run-

sudo apt install avidemux*

4. Run this open-source video editing software

Once the installation is completed, we can either use the command terminal or GUI application launcher of Ubuntu 22.04 to start using the Avidemux software.

To start using the command terminal

avidemux &

Using the GUI Launcher

Click on the “Show Application” Dots icon given on the Ubuntu’s Dock and after that search for Avidemux. As its icon appears, click to run the same.

5. How to update or upgrade

In the future to receive the new version updates for the application, if available, simply run the system update command. It is because we have used a PPA repository.

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

 

6. Uninstall or Remove Avidemux – Ubuntu 22.04

Many users would not need the Avidemux on their systems after editing the required videos; or due to any reason, if you want to remove the software and its PPA repository then use the given commands:

sudo apt remove avidemux*

To remove the PPA as well, if you don’t install 

sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:xtradeb/apps -y
