How to install Kooha ScreenRecoder on Ubuntu Linux

If you don’t like Ubuntu’s default Gnome screen recorder tool, try Kooha on your system. Here, we learn the steps using Flatpak to install Kooha on Ubuntu 24.04, 22.04, 20.04, or any other version you are using including Linux Mint and Debian.

The open-source and lightweight Kooha simplifies screen recording by providing a minimal interface that allows the user to either record any specific area or the entire screen. Not only the screen but can capture audio from the microphone and speakers as well. Step-by-Step Installation Guide for Kooha on Ubuntu:

1. Install Flatpak:

Koohs is not present to install through the default system repository of Ubuntu, therefore, we need to first configure Flatpak on our system. Here is the command to install it via the terminal:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install flatpak

2. Add the Flathub Repository

Although we have the Flatpak installed, however, we also need to add its repository so that it can have the package source to download and install the Flatpak Apps.

sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

3. Reboot the system

To properly integrate the Flatpak, restart the system after adding the Flathub Repository. We can either use the GUI or simply run the given command to do that:

sudo reboot

4. Installing Kooha on Ubuntu Linux

Finally, the Flatpak to install the Kooha is on our Ubuntu or any other operating system you are using. Now, we can use the Terminal to install Kooha, here is the command to do that:

sudo flatpak install flathub io.github.seadve.Kooha

5. How to use Kooha to record screen with Audio

I am assuming that you already have the Kooha on your Ubuntu system, now let’s see how to use it for recording our Ubuntu screen.

We can start Kooha either from your system’s application menu, just search for “Kooha’ and as it appears click to run it. Alternatively, we can use the following command in a terminal: flatpak run io.github.seadve.Kooha

After launching the application, you will see multiple icons – for recording full display, selection area, with system speaker or microphone audio, and including a Mouse pointer while recording. Once you have selected what settings you want just click on the “record” button.

For removing the Flatpak installed Kooha, in the future, if needed, here is the command to run in the terminal:

sudo flatpak remove flathub io.github.seadve.Kooha
