AlmaLinux is an initiative by the company CloudLinux, which already has a distribution for hosting providers in its program, including CloudLinux OS. In terms of features and commands, there is no difference between AlmaLinux and its counterpart such as CentOS and others that are based on RHEL. After the RedHat announcement of closing Long term supported version of CentOS, CloudLinux came forward to provide LTS versions of CentOS in the form of AlmaLinux. It is a completely free 1: 1 binary compatible fork of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
Initially, this CentOS alternative developed under a Project called Lenix, that later renamed and now called AlmaLinux.
CentOS was started in 2004 as a community project for an RHEL-compatible Linux distribution. Red Hat provides the RHEL source packages free of charge under the GPL. In 2014, CentOS and Red Hat merged. Since then, every new RHEL version has been followed by a CentOS version without trademarked content and certified security policies from Red Hat.
In addition to Project Lenix alias AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux also succeeds CentOS. Rocky Linux comes from Gregory Kurtzer, the founder of the CentOS project.
